Overview:
A voracious eater of hair algae, these beauties will develop greatly extended fins as they grow.
Barbs, named for the sensory barbels on their mouths, come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Most are peaceful, energetic fishes which add movement and color to their aquariums. They are also some of the hardiest species, making them fairly easy aquarium fish to keep. A few species, like the infamous Tiger Barb, are fin-nippers and have given all Barbs a mostly undeserved reputation as "aggressive." In actuality, most barbs are quite peaceful, especially if kept in large groups. They are assertive, curious, and fast feeders, so they don't mix well with shy species or slow eaters. Barring that, however, they are generally fine companions for many species of community fish.
Setup Considerations:
Most barbs in the aquarium hobby are highly social. When kept in large groups, their best colors and most interesting behaviors come to the forefront and, since they are focused on the others in their group, they are less curious about other species in the tank. Less curious = less bothersome, so we recommend keeping barbs in shoals, especially in community aquariums.
Diet:
These omnivores are generally among the easiest aquarium fish to feed. They will eagerly eat pretty much everything from dry prepared foods and gel foods to frozen and live foods. In nature, they eat insects and their larvae, as well as large amounts of detritus containing decaying plant matter. In the aquarium, a rotation of plant based and animal protein based foods will help ensure they receive an adequately balanced diet.
