Overview: A very colorful cichlid from the genus as the iconic Firemouth. A very dramatic fish in the scientific world. There is some debate over whether T. ellioti and T. maculipinnis are the same species, and if they are, whether T. ellioti or T. maculipinnis is the correct name. We received these as T. maculipinnis, and that's what we're selling them as to keep them separate just in case.
Setup Considerations: These guys do well in shoals of 6 or more. They like to dig through the substrate looking for food and building nests to spawn.
Specific Care Requirements: Like most cichlids, they can become hyper aggressive when they're in spawning mode, so having a second tank to separate them is a good idea.
Diet: Omnivore. In the wild they pick through the substrate eating little invertebrates. They're readily eating flakes and pellets for us.
