General Manager

Dan's Fish LLC  ·  Sheridan, Wyoming  ·  On-site  ·  Full Time  ·  Paid time off  ·  Compensation commensurate with experience  ·  Performance bonus

About Dan's Fish

Dan's Fish is a mission-driven aquarium fish company working to create a more humane aquarium industry—one where customers receive healthy fish that thrive. We source as close to the origin as possible, reduce crowding in transit, quarantine and recover fish before they are offered for sale, operate an in-house diagnostic lab, work with certified aquatic veterinarians, and ship fish individually so they arrive healthy and ready to thrive in our customer's aquariums.

We will never be the least expensive place to buy fish. That is by design. When mission and money conflict, we side with the mission, doing what is best for the fish despite increased costs.  We are trying to be the retailer a fish would want to end up in if it had a choice.

The company operates a large warehouse in Sheridan, Wyoming, with hundreds of independent aquariums, a state of the art flow-through water system, and a national shipping operation. The General Manager is a critical hire: this person will run the business day to day so the company can keep raising the standard of care as it scales.

The Role

The General Manager is responsible for making sure Dan's Fish operates in accordance with—and continues progress toward—its mission. This is a hands-on leadership role. The right person will spend time on the warehouse floor, with the team, with vendors, and in the numbers. It is not a remote or purely strategic office job.

You will own daily operations, people, planning, facilities, and purchasing. Success means that fish stay healthy, the team is well led, culture is accentuated, customers continue to receive thriving fish, and the founder is no longer the bottleneck for ordinary operating decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Oversee daily business activities across sourcing, fish care, quarantine and treatment processes, order fulfillment, and shipping.

  • Set performance goals and keep the team focused on quality, live-arrival outcomes, workflow efficiency, and customer results—not volume for its own sake.

  • Build and maintain clear procedures so standards do not depend on any one person being in the room.

  • Identify bottlenecks and improve systems without lowering the standard of care.

Strategy

  • Develop short- and long-term plans for growth and profitability that protect fish welfare and brand trust.

  • Give the founder clear recommendations grounded in capacity, cost, risk, and mission—not optimism alone.

  • Track the numbers that matter: labor, freight, inventory health, spoilage, shipping outcomes, facility cost, and margin.

Human Resources

  • Recruit, train, mentor, schedule, and evaluate staff.

  • Create a workplace where people understand why the work matters and are held to a high standard.

  • Handle the practical people work of a growing company: hiring pipelines, onboarding, coaching, performance conversations, and coverage planning.

Facility

  • Ensure buildings, property, life-support systems, packing equipment, and related tools stay maintained and reliable.

  • Put preventive maintenance and backup plans for vital systems in place.

Procurement

  • Purchase equipment, and supplies with quality, reliability, animal welfare, cost and profit in mind.

  • Manage vendor relationships and hold suppliers to Dan's Fish's high standards of animal welfare.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience with operations leadership, with accountability for results, quality, people, and costs.

  • Hands-on experience running a physical operation such as a warehouse, plant, distribution center, production facility, or similar environment.

  • Demonstrated success recruiting, training, mentoring, and holding a team accountable.

  • Strength in workflow design, inventory or procurement, vendor management, and facility upkeep.

  • Ability to make sound decisions when quality, animal welfare, and/or long-term reputation conflict with short-term revenue.

  • Ability to work full time on-site in Sheridan, Wyoming.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in one of the following or similar fields: business, operations, logistics/supply chain management.

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred

  • Experience with live animals, aquaculture, ornamental fish, the pet trade, hatcheries, or other perishable / high-stakes production and fulfillment.

  • E-commerce fulfillment experience, especially time-critical shipping and exception handling.

  • Familiarity with biosecurity, quarantine logic, or animal-health workflows.

  • Understanding of water treatment/filtration equipment and plumbing.

  • Experience scaling a founder-led or small growing company without flattening its culture.

  • Working knowledge of live-animal shipping, import/export, or related permitting.

  • Experience hiring and developing people in a smaller labor market.

What this role is not

  • A remote general manager position.

  • A sales-only or brand-ambassador role.

  • A job for someone whose first instinct is to win on price or volume over quality and reputation.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation commensurate with experience.

  • Relocation/Signing Bonus.

  • Paid time off.

  • Performance bonus.

Additional details will be discussed with qualified candidates.
